Parks and Recreation in Charleston

Running short of cash on your trip to Charleston?  Don’t sweat it!   The Parks and Recreation of both the City of Charleston and Charleston County have lots of inexpenive entertainment and recreation options for you and your family.  For starters, the beaches are some of the best anywhere!  You may not have thought about it but Biking in Charleston is awesome.

Includes programs, activities and athletics as well as reserve various facilities. Payments can be made online, too.

Parks of Charleston County also has online registration/ticketing.  You need an Account to register for courses or purchase membership passes or event tickets.  Click here to get started.

Click her to purchase advance tickets for Charleston County Parks including parking for Beachwalker Park, Folly Beach County Park (currently closed), Isle of Palms Park, James Island  Park, Palmetto Island Park, and Wannamaker Park as well as Caw Caw Interpretive Center.   The last time I looked the parking was $6 a car and the Caw Caw was .75 a ticket.  Pretty reasonable, huh?

‎’Southern Living’ named Charleston and 9 others as nominees for Tastiest Town in the South.

The editors and experts of Southern Living magazine held a summit in their test kitchens and and narrowed down their list of the ‘Tastiest Town in the South’ down to 10.   Really?  Is there really a contest?  Here are five of the other nominees:

  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Louisville, Kentucky
  • Birmingham, Alabama

New Guide is Published for Charleston Tour Guide Training.

The Historic Charleston Foundation has published a new book for its guides, ‘The City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual’.  The book is 492 pages long and is available in a spiral bound format or in a CD format.  Read more about it in the article on Post and Courier.com entitled, ‘Rewriting History: After nearly three decades, Charleston updates its notes for tour guides’.

Charleston is planning a museum marking where slaves landed

‘Charleston’s planned International African American Museum could draw more attention by creating a plaza called “Arrival Square” marking where thousands of slaves set foot into North America.

The square, suggested for near Calhoun and Concord streets, would expand the appeal and marketability of the museum, officials said, including by highlighting a former Cooper River wharf where hundreds of slaves ships are reported to have tied up.’
